pickups 5

so who is this guy and what has he got to do with new guitar design?

Baron Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858 - 1929)

Austrian scientist and inventor who studied under Robert Bunsen (yes, the inventor of the Bunsen Burner).

for our purposes, he discovered a most important element on the periodic table

Nd

Neodymium

and moreover, the element found it's way into the design (much later in 1982) of Neodymium magnets

there is a designer who has been using Neodymium magnets in his pickups for 25 years.

and when I first used them I was swept off my feet and fell in love.

Q Tuner

first off, let's hear the new Q Tuner 2.0 single coils in action

amazing frequency response from 10hz to 10khz.

let's look at an earlier inception of the Q Tuner design

side wound pickups and adjustable pole pieces all over the place!

the 2.0 pickups have been simplified (not compromised) and look like, well, a covered pickup. as in this picture.

but did I mention that they are a PASSIVE pickup? I haven't had much luck with active pickups in the past. not to say that that won't change in the future.

by the way, Erno at Q Tuner also builds guitars like the one above. If you are interested drop him a line.

If his guitars are anything like the pickups they hold,
you are in for a treat.
